What is Project Mosquito Net?
Project Mosquito net is a grass roots effort and a collaboration amongst a group of nonprofits to provide a malaria free zone in the region of Mbita, Kenya and Lusaka, Zambia. Together we supply children and pregnant mothers with long, lasting insecticide treated mosquito bed nets to prevent the infection of malaria. Mbita is a region in Kenya located in the western section of Kenya near Lake Victoria and Lusaka is the capital of Zambia.
This collaborative effort began in 2005 when two U.S. based non-profits, Be the Cause and Power of Love, along with the Kenyan based Akado Medical Center joined together to provide bed nets, also known as insecticide treated nets (ITNs), to orphaned and vulnerable children in the township of Mbita, Kenya. Mbita is situated on Lake Victoria making it more vulnerable to mosquito infestation because of the large area of water bordering this region. Since malaria primarily kills children under five years of age along with pregnant mothers our primary mission is to raise funds to buy mosquito bed nets, netting that fits over beds and sleeping areas, to protect these two very vulnerable groups. Once the nets are bought and transported to Mbita, our partner, the Akado Medical Center, distributes them to their community children and mothers based on the above criteria of age and susceptibility to malaria.
Every dollar raised, 100% of the funds, raised by this project goes to providing a net to a child in the Mbita region. The money entirely goes to purchase and distribute bed nets as we are 100% volunteer.
At the moment our nets are provided by two different sources: both from the wonderful organization African HEART, an organization in Kenya that supports women widowed as a result of the AIDS epidemic. We have also been a recipient of a grant of six thousand nets from the London based organization, World Swim Against Malaria. We currently also have an agreement with World Swim Against Malaria that allows us to through your donation to purchase long lasting, insecticide treated nets at the very low price of $5.00 each.
