What is Project Mosquito Net?

Project Mosquito net is a grass roots effort and collaboration amongst non-profits to provide a malaria free zone in the region of Mbita, Kenya by supplying children and pregnant mothers with mosquito bed nets. Mbita is located in the western region of Kenya near Lake Victoria.

Receiving a net at Health Education Day 2006

This collaborative effort began with two U.S. based non-profit, Be the Cause and Power of Love, along with the Kenyan based Akado Medical Center joined together to provide bed nets, also known as insecticide treated nets (ITNs), to orphaned and vulnerable children in the township of Mbita, Kenya in 2005. Mbita is next to Lake Victoria making it more vulnerable to mosquito infestation. Since malaria primarily kills children under 5 and pregnant mothers funds are raised to buy mosquito bed nets, netting that fits over beds and sleeping areas, to protect these vulnerable groups. The Akado Medical Center then distributes them to their community children under 5 years of age.

Every dollar raised, 100% of the funds, raised by this project goes to providing a net to a child in the Mbita region, the money entirely goes to purchase and distribute bed nets.

At the moment our nets are provided by two sources. We have bought nets from the wonderful organization African HEART, an organization in Kenya that supports women widowed as a result of the AIDS epidemic. These same nets get transported and distributed for free to children and pregnant mothers at risk of malaria infection. We have also recently had nets donated to us from the incredible organization, World Swim Against Malaria.
